Data Analyst cover letter example
A cover letter for an early-career data analyst moving to a retailer. It answers the two priorities named in the job ad with her own results.
Opens in the editor with this letter. Change the company, the recipient and the paragraphs. No sign-up needed.
Why this letter works
Matches the team’s priorities
It picks up the two focus areas from the posting, retention and pricing, and answers both with her own results.
From query to decision
The letter shows she can take an analysis all the way to a recommendation people act on.
Early career, still concrete
A short career is presented through outcomes rather than a list of tools.
Paragraph by paragraph
What each paragraph does in the letter, with a short tip for that part.
Opening
I would like to apply for the Data Analyst role at Lantern Grocers. For the last four years I have turned retail and energy data into decisions, and I am looking for a team where analysis feeds directly into how stores are run.
Name the role and say in one or two sentences why you are a strong match. Skip "I am writing to apply for…": the reader already knows.
Why this company
Your posting names customer retention and pricing as the team’s focus for next year. I have already worked on both from start to finish, from writing the SQL to presenting the recommendation.
Show you know who you are writing to: a product, a project, a value or a recent step of theirs, and why it matters to you. One specific detail beats three general compliments.
Evidence
At Hollis & Rowe Retail I:
- analysed customer churn with SQL and Python and found three drivers behind a retention plan that cut churn by 8%
- designed and analysed A/B tests on pricing pages, backing a change that raised revenue per visitor by 6%
- built Power BI dashboards tracking 25 KPIs that replaced 10 hours of manual reporting each week
Pick one or two achievements that match the ad and tell them briefly: the situation, what you did and the result. Do not repeat your whole resume.
Evidence
Before that, at Fernway Energy, I trained 20 colleagues on self-service reporting. It cut ad-hoc data requests by 40% and taught me to explain numbers to people who do not work with them every day.
Closing
Thank you for reading. I would be happy to walk you through one of these analyses in an interview.
Thank the reader, say you would welcome an interview and mention when you are available. Keep it short and confident; no need to apologise or beg.
Tips for data analyst cover letters
- Name the business decision your analysis changed; analysts are hired for decisions, not dashboards.
- Offering to walk through one analysis is a strong, honest closing for this role.
