Software Engineer cover letter example
A cover letter for a mid-level backend engineer applying to a payments company. It picks three results from her resume that match the role and adds one honest reason for choosing the company.

Why this letter works
The overlap comes first
The first two sentences connect her current payment work to the role, so the reader sees the fit before any detail.
Three results, not a resume rerun
Only the results that matter to a payments team are picked; the rest stays in the resume.
A reason to choose this company
One honest sentence about the company’s focus shows the letter was written for them.
Paragraph by paragraph
What each paragraph does in the letter, with a short tip for that part.
Opening
I would like to apply for the Backend Software Engineer role at Northfold Payments. For more than four years at Brightline Freight I have built and run a payment service that handles more than two million transactions a month, and your posting reads like a description of that work.
Name the role and say in one or two sentences why you are a strong match. Skip "I am writing to apply for…": the reader already knows.
Why this company
What draws me to Northfold is your focus on reliable payouts for small merchants. In payments, a quiet and predictable system is the product, and that is the kind of engineering I enjoy most.
Show you know who you are writing to: a product, a project, a value or a recent step of theirs, and why it matters to you. One specific detail beats three general compliments.
Evidence
A few results I would bring with me:
- Run the payment service at 99.95% uptime
- Cut average API response time by 40% with caching and rewritten database queries
- Moved releases from monthly to weekly by building CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions
Pick one or two achievements that match the ad and tell them briefly: the situation, what you did and the result. Do not repeat your whole resume.
Evidence
I also enjoy helping teammates grow: I have mentored four junior engineers through code reviews and pair programming, and two of them were promoted within a year.
Closing
Thank you for your time. I would be glad to talk about how I could help your team ship faster without giving up reliability.
Thank the reader, say you would welcome an interview and mention when you are available. Keep it short and confident; no need to apologise or beg.
Tips for software engineer cover letters
- Mention the scale you worked at (transactions, users, requests); engineering managers read it as a sign of the problems you have already solved.
- Leave the full tech stack to the resume. In the letter, name only the tools the posting asks for.
