Grace’s cover letterWhy this resume works
Business results, not just tools
Churn, revenue per visitor and hours saved show what the analysis changed, and SQL and Power BI appear as the means.
A clear step up
The junior role covers data quality and training, and the current role covers churn analysis and A/B tests. The progression is easy to follow.
A certificate that adds something
The Power BI certification backs up the dashboard work. It is not listed for the sake of a longer page.
Example data analyst bullet points
Use them as a starting point and replace the numbers with your own results. Never add a number you could not explain in an interview.
- Built Power BI dashboards tracking 25 KPIs, replacing 10 hours of manual weekly reporting
- Analyzed customer churn with SQL and Python, uncovering 3 drivers behind a retention plan that cut churn by 8%
- Automated data cleaning for 4 source systems, reducing reporting errors by 70%
- Designed and analyzed A/B tests for pricing pages, backing a change that raised revenue per visitor by 6%
- Created a single source of truth for sales data, ending conflicting numbers between finance and sales
- Presented monthly insights to leadership, turning findings into 5 approved process improvements
- Optimized SQL queries over 200M+ rows, cutting dashboard refresh time from 30 to 4 minutes
- Trained 20 colleagues on self-service reporting, reducing ad-hoc data requests by 40%
Skills worth considering
Tips, section by section
- Profile
- Two or three sentences: who you are, what you are strongest at and what you are looking for. For example:
Data analyst with 3+ years in SQL, Power BI and Python. Replaced 10 hours of weekly manual reporting with dashboards and found the three churn drivers behind a retention plan that cut churn by 8%.
- Experience
- Most recent job first. Two to four bullets per job, each starting with a verb and ending with a result where you can.
- Skills
- Match the keywords in the job ad with skills you actually use. Six to ten skills are usually enough.
- Education
- With little experience you can put education first and add relevant courses or projects.
Tips for data analyst resumes
- Say how big the data was (rows, sources, refresh times) when it was a real challenge. "Large datasets" on its own says very little.
- If you have a portfolio of public dashboards or notebooks, link it in the header.
